Some of your functions are excellent at delivering certain types of development project.

You have Simple but effective development processes and tools for different categories of project. You capture your best practises that have been hard won from previous developments and make sure that they are properly deployed on future developments.

However, you are not so good at cross-functional projects that require expertise from different departments. For instance, this makes it difficult to move developments from Technology Departments into Production.

What you now need to put in place is:

  • An empowered but cross-functional core team for undertaking every aspect of the project over its full life cycle. Create team accountability and authority to undertake the job. In return, they’ll move mountains to ensure success. Do you want your projects to achieve better financial success? Then add someone from finance to the project team to manage the risks and financial targets.
  • A functional structure that willingly resources the core team including the extended team as the workload ebbs and flows. Often, functional heads are slow to deliver their resources to projects. Give functional heads the authority to implement their own resourcing plans so that highly trained staff are always available at the right time for projects.
  • A senior cross-functional, but decisive team that reviews each of the key phases of the project and that makes go/no-go or redirect decisions. Don’t sweat the small stuff, but do make sure that critical investment decisions are managed by the business heads.
