This Saudi joint venture looked like a classic “we need a new strategy” assignment. Each stakeholder presented a different view of the business, different ambitions, different priorities. They had been arguing for months, each convinced the others “didn’t get it”. This case study describes how I joined forces with Aczel&Co to create a strategy.
But as we interviewed them remotely, a pattern quietly emerged. Their ideas were not contradictory at all. They were thinking in different time horizons. Some were focused on the immediate priority of stabilising aircraft support in the Gulf. Others were already looking 15 years out, imagining a diversified, sovereign capability supporting Vision 2030.
Once we showed them the sliders for time horizon, focus, diversification and risk appetite, and replayed their own positions back to them, everything fell into place. The tension vanished. The arguments stopped.
They suddenly realised they had been in agreement all along. They didn’t need a new strategy; they needed to see their existing one sequenced correctly, with the right timescales. And because it emerged from their own inputs, the buy-in was instant. It was deeply satisfying to save them months of analysis by revealing that clarity was already there.
